Pep Guardiola side looked to be in control of the game when Mahrez scored after half hour mark. But Blancos scored twice to force extra time.
It was Manchester City that broke the deadlock when Riyad Mahrez fired a fierce shot into the top corner at Thibaut Courtois' near post with about a quarter of an hour left to play.
In the 90th minute, Rodrygo Goes levelled on the night and put the hosts within a goal on aggregate. A ball to the back post found Benzema. Stretching and on the jump, he teed up the Brazilian to tap in at the near post.
Within a minute Rodrygo scored again, making him the first-ever Champions League player to score twice after the 90th minute. This time he emphatically headed home on the end of a cross from the right, whipped in by Dani Carvajal and flicked on by Marco Asensio.
Real Madrid got the third goal after Benzema won a penalty for his side early on in the first period of extra time as he lured Ruben Dias into making a challenge. The 34-year-old smartly tucked his penalty into the bottom corner, giving Ederson no chance.
