Lionel Messi annouced himself to the rest of the world after he guided Argentine to glory at the 2008 Summer Olympics was held in Beijing, China.



The Paris Saint-Germain star who is now 34-year-old was among the players who represented Argentina for the men's football tournament.




Although, Messi at the time wasnt an established player in the squad. It's understood that Argentine squad had several stars such as Sergio Romero, Pablo Zabaleta, Ezequiel Garay, Javier Mascherano, Fernando Gago, Juan Roman Riquelme, Angel Di Maria, Lionel Messi, Ezequiel Lavezzi and Sergio Aguero.

Roman Riquelme who wore the jersey number 10, captained the team in the football competition.




On 23 August 2008, Argentina claimed gold after they beat Nigeria 1-0 at the Bird’s Nest stadium in Beijing.

The only goal of the game was scored by Angel Di Maria from an assist by Lionel Messi in the 58th minute.


Messi has been a long time friend of Sergio Aguero who is now retired.

The 34-year-old played in several age grade competitions with Argentina before they finally broke into the national team.
