Several European clubs have continue to register their displeasure about African players participating in the African Cup of Nations. The African Cup of Nations tournament, AFCON, is a competition held every two years. The tournament is usually staged in January which makes is difficult for clubs to release their players while their season is ongoing.
Some club football managers in the past have called for the tournament to be cancelled or even shifted in order not to disrupt the European football season calender.
Laurentiis said that he will never again buy an African player ‘unless they sign an agreement backing out of the Africa Cup of Nations’
As quoted from Sport Bible: “I told them lads, don’t talk to me about Africans anymore!”
“I love them, but either they sign something confirming they’ll back out of playing the Africa Cup of Nations, or otherwise between that tournament, the World Cup qualifiers in South America, these players are never available!”
“We are the idiots who pay salaries only to send them all over the world playing for others."
