After Kylian Mbappe's abuse, a French minister asks FIFA to investigate Emiliano Martinez and Argentina fans.
A French minister says that FIFA ought to investigate Emi Martinez and the Argentine fans who abused Kylian Mbappe.
A video of the Aston Villa goalkeeper observing a minute of silence in honor of the "dead" Mbappe in the dressing room surfaced shortly after Martinez's heroics in the penalty shootout earned Argentina the trophy at the expense of France.
Emi Martinez made fun of Mbappe by holding a baby doll with the Frenchman's face on it during the celebrations back in Argentina. Martinez, 30, then made more fun of Mbappe by holding a baby doll with the Frenchman's face on it during the celebrations.
After the game, the 24-year-old Paris Saint-Germain forward and his France teammates also received racial epithets on social media.
Bruno Le Maire, the French minister of Economy, Finance, and Recovery, has criticized Martinez's behavior, as well as online abuse and those who burned a coffin with a picture of Mbappe on it during the Argentine celebrations.
Speaking to Sud Radio, a furious Le Maire said: "What is Fifa doing? Sport is about fair play.
"It’s showing respect for others. It's showing respect for those who lost."
Mbappe lost Sunday's final despite scoring a fantastic hat-trick to send France all the way to penalties.
The 24-year-old scored eight goals to win the Golden Boot, one more than his PSG teammate Messi, who scored two in the final.
