Lionel Messi has participated in more World Cup games overall since the 1966 tournament than any other player (13 – level with Ronaldo).
After giving Argentina the lead against Croatia in the World Cup semi-final on Tuesday, Lionel Messi surpassed Gabriel Batistuta as the country's all-time leading scorer in a tournament.
After Julian Alvarez was brought down by Croatian goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic inside the box, Messi scored the game's first goal with a devastating left-footed strike from the penalty spot. Messi went up to score his 11th World Cup goal and convert the penalty kick.
