Marcos Alonso is reportedly on the verge of penning an improved contract at Barcelona
Just under four months after joining Barcelona on a free transfer from Chelsea, Marcos Alonso is said to be close to signing a more lucrative contract.

After leaving Stamford Bridge in the summer, Alonso signed a one-year contract with Barca, but the Spanish club's financial issues forced him to sign on lower terms.

Barca were unable to grant the 31-year-old a three-year contract in order to stay within LaLiga's salary cap, so he had to accept a significant pay cut to join.

It has been learned that officials at Barcelona are in a position to offer him a better deal heading into the new year, and President Joan Laporta insists that they will not spend money on new players next month.

Mundo Deportivo says that Alonso is close to signing a two-year deal in Catalonia that would keep him at Barca until he is 34 years old.

Despite only playing in seven league games thus far, the former Chelsea player's versatility has impressed Xavi, who has used him as a temporary center back in recent matches.

Alonso helped out as a third central defender in Barca's last five games before the World Cup break despite injuries to Jules Kounde, Ronald Araujo, and Andreas Christensen. He did well in his new position.

Barca spent £130 million in the summer to sign seven new players, including Alonso, to improve their chances of winning this season.
