Mikel Arteta, the manager of Arsenal, was miffed after his team lost to Newcastle in a competitive match at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday night, dropping points in the title race.
The Gunners were held to a 0-0 draw by Newcastle just days after taking a seven-point lead over Manchester City at the top of the Premier League. Madley issued no less than nine yellow cards during the tense match.
Arteta was animated on the sidelines the entire game, and tensions with Newcastle manager Eddie Howe threatened to flare after Madley denied Arsenal a late penalty after it appeared the ball ricocheted off an arm.
“We miss in the final third, we had so many situations and then we had two scandalous penalties.
Arteta mentioned two instances that happened in the second half. Dan Burn pulled Gabriel Magalhaes' shirt during a free kick around the 60th minute mark.
He added: “They are two penalties, it’s very simple. I’m talking about what I’ve seen, now, and it’s two scandalous penalties.
“We had enough chances to win the game.
“Newcastle haven’t played any team like this this season. It’s credit to my players.”
