To honor his father, who wore the No. 9 jersey as a player, Brazilian football legend Pele will be laid to rest on the ninth floor of a vertical cemetery, overlooking the Santos football field in his beloved hometown.
On January 3, Pele will be interred in the vault at the Memorial Necropole Ecumenica, just one mile from the stadium that made him famous.
The Brazilian player reportedly gave gravesite selection a lot of thought before deciding to honor his father, Dodinho, in the location of his final resting place.
Dodinho, a center-forward who passed away in 1996, sported the No. 9 jersey.
According to the Mirror, Pele made the decision to be interred in the world's tallest vertical cemetery on the ninth floor as a tribute to his father.
The vertical cemetery, which has more than 14,000 vaults, was constructed in 1983. It has a restaurant, a tropical garden, and even a museum of vintage cars.
The nation will observe three days of national mourning following the funeral.
Following a protracted battle with cancer, Edson Arantes do Nascimento passed away on Thursday. Pele, the legend, was 82 years old. He is regarded as the greatest player of all time and the only person to have won three World Cups in 1958, 1962, and 1970.
