Hugo Lloris said that he is experiencing post-World Cup hangover symptoms after some recent mistakes cost his team.
After France's loss to Argentina on penalties in the Qatar tournament final in December, the captain of Tottenham announced his retirement from international service.
The 36-year-old veteran Lloris has made a number of high-profile errors since rejoining Spurs, and he recently discussed the physical and emotional challenges of readjusting to life at his team.
He said: 'You have to take into consideration that it's not a normal season. From the beginning of September, we played every three days until the World Cup.
'Then when you finish the World Cup, for the players who reached the final, in one week's time you have to go back to your club and again repeat every three or four days. So it's very difficult mentally but also physically to stay at your best.
'But that's the demand of the competition this year. Even if sometimes you can face difficulties you just won't give up, you want to continue, you want to push and you want to be ready for the important period of the season.'
After losing to Argentina in the tournament final in Qatar, Lloris announced his retirement from the France squad.
Prior to Riyad Mahrez's goal against Manchester City, Lloris allowed a crossshot from Bukayo Saka to slip past his hands and into the net in the North London derby between Arsenal and Tottenham.
The retired French goalie added: 'We know we have a deficit of points and we have to run after the others to get into the top four. But there are plenty of games and we have to stay confident and positive — and also we really want to reach the level that should be ours.'
After losses to Arsenal and Manchester City the previous week, Antonio Conte's team takes on promoted Fulham on Monday night hoping to get back on the winning track.
