Unai Emery, the manager of Aston Villa, criticized Emiliano Martinez for his contribution to Gabriel Martinelli's goal for Arsenal.
Late in the game, with Villa trailing 3-2, the World Cup winner went up for a corner in an attempt to help his team score a goal.
Martinelli scored the game's final goal, a 4-2 victory for Arsenal, by tapping the ball into an empty net as the visitors took advantage of their mistake.
Martinez's decision to go up for the corner was criticized by former Arsenal manager Emery after the team lost.
Speaking exclusively to talkSPORT, he said: “Our game plan is, of course, quality really and on the pitch they have to take the decision.
“He decided in the last action to go to the corner offensively, but I don’t like it.
“But I told him nothing, before or after because in all my career I have never told our goalkeepers to do it and the statistical data is going against the teams that are going with the goalkeeper more than scoring any goals.”
When asked if he has told the goalkeeper not to do it again, Emery replied: “He can learn for the next matches.”
Due to their performance in the first half, many people would have predicted that Villa would defeat the Premier League title contenders.
Bukayo Saka's volley cancelled out Ollie Watkins' first-half goal, but Phillipe Coutinho's deft finish gave them the lead at the break.
Oleksandr Zinchenko brought Arsenal's score even, and after Martin Odegaard's error, they believed they would lose more ground.
Nevertheless, in stoppage time, a long-range shot from Jorginho deflected off Martinez and struck the underside of the bar.
The Gunners won in dramatic fashion and returned to the top of the Premier League standings thanks to Martinelli's goal five minutes later.
