Arne Espeel, a goalkeeper for the Belgian team Winkel Sport B, passed away during a game after collapsing and losing consciousness.
After saving a penalty against Westrozebeke in Sint-Eloois-Winkel, West Flanders Province, the 25-year-old goalkeeper collapsed on the field.
Using a defibrillator, emergency personnel ran onto the field but it was too late to revive the goalkeeper.
Espeel was pronounced dead not long after being brought to the hospital.
The player's family and friends were offered the club's condolences in a statement that also expressed sadness and grief.
