Due to an uncertain future following the hiring of Noni Madueke, Hakim Ziyech appeared destined to leave Chelsea during the January transfer window.
Hakim Ziyech's potential signing with Roma was confirmed to have been discussed with Chelsea. The 29-year-old's departure from Stamford Bridge was frequently discussed throughout the January transfer window, but a deal to Paris Saint-Germain fell through due to administrative issues.
According to the Evening Standard, Roma sporting director Tiago Pinto confirmed the Italian team's discussions with Ziyech and expressed sympathy for his predicament.
He said: "It's true that we spoke to Ziyech’s agents and Chelsea about him. "He was one of our targets. I'm sorry for what happened to him, it was difficult for him, but those who say we were in contact with Ziyech's agents were right."
Nicolo Zaniolo, who has since joined Galatasaray, was slated to be replaced by Ziyech.
Late on the day of the transfer deadline, PSG came into focus as a possible exit for the Moroccan winger, and a deal was even in place for him to join Christoph Galtier's team on loan through the end of the campaign. PSG was reportedly open to signing him, and Ziyech was willing to accept a financial hit.
A move was unsuccessful, and according to several reports, incorrect paperwork had also been submitted. Technology-related problems were also said to have contributed to the problem. The French Football League's governing body, the LFP, rejected the French Giants' appeal.
Pinto added: "If someone thinks that he left due to the lack of contract offer then they are totally wrong. Nicolo was loved like few players - the moment he refuses to wear the Roma shirt it goes beyond any discussion about a renewal."
Due to the failure of his transfers to Roma and PSG, Ziyech will now spend the rest of the season at Chelsea.
