Emi Martinez, the goalkeeper for Aston Villa, scored an own goal in extra time to give Arsenal a crucial three points in the Premier League title race.

After Emiliano Martinez's own goal gave Arsenal a crucial victory, the supporters have made it clear that they have no sympathy for him.

The Gunners needed all three points badly as they squared off against their former goalkeeper on Saturday. After losing their position atop the Premier League standings for three straight games, Mikel Arteta's team faced Aston Villa.

Aside from the obvious plot points, however, the match was full of intrigue thanks to Unai Emery and Martinez in goal for the home team. Emery, who was replaced by Arteta in 2019, had his team fired up, and they took the lead early on thanks to Ollie Watkins.

Bukayo Saka reversed that, but before halftime Philippe Coutinho restored Villa's lead. With a half-hour left, Oleksandr Zinchenko brought Arsenal back into the game for a second time, but that was just the beginning of the drama that lay ahead.

The Gunners appeared to be resigned to losing more points as the seconds passed, and Jorginho fired an outrageous shot off the crossbar. Instead of the Italian's attempt deflecting away from danger, it fell to Martinez's head and went into the goal.

The fact that the Argentine spent the majority of the second half attempting to stop the clock gave the visiting Arsenal supporters the impression that justice had been served. The six minutes of stoppage time were ultimately necessary as a result of the World Cup winner's deliberate stalling tactics.

That gave his former team enough time to not only score once, but also to put the game out of reach with a second goal. In the waning seconds, the keeper disobeyed orders and went up for a corner, which angered Emery and the Gunners faithful.

Martinez hasn't responded to his manager, but that hasn't stopped Arsenal fans from pouring cold water on his wounds by retorting in large numbers to a last week's apology. He said the fans deserved better in his last post, which has since received hundreds of jubilant Arsenal responses, which was made after the team's loss to Manchester City.

“Arsenal legend,” one reply says. “Did you try holding the ball for 30 seconds every time and then heading it in your own net?” Another post jokes.

A third fan chimed in with: “HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA GREAT GOALIE, THANK YOU FOR THE THREE POINTS,” while another said: “Once a gunner always a gunner Thank you Emi!”
