Following the earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria on February 6, 2023, Atsu tragically passed away.
After being buried under the rubble of his apartment for 12 days, the 31-year-old's lifeless body was discovered on Saturday, February 18, 2023.
His passing shocked the soccer community, and his former teams FC Porto and Rio Ave paid their respects to the player.
Following a devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake that struck the Turkish city of Hatay, Atsu tragically perished after being buried under debris for 12 days.
On Saturday, February 18, 2023, the dead body of the Hatayspor winger was discovered and immediately flown to Ghana, his country of origin.
Atsu's first stop in Europe was Portugal, where he signed with Porto as a teenager and rose through the ranks before debuting for the senior team there in 2011. He worked for Rio Ave. for a season on loan.
Prior to playing for Bournemouth, Everton, and Newcastle United in the English leagues, the former Ghanaian international earned a dream transfer to England in 2013, joining Chelsea.
Atsu previously played for the Turkish team Hatayspor. He came off the bench to score the game-winning goal in his final match for the team against Kasimpasa.
