Liverpool took the lead after just four minutes thanks to Darwin Nunez's brilliant flick, and Mohamed Salah doubled their lead ten minutes later by capitalizing on Thibaut Courtois' shoddy clearance from Real.
The thunderous celebrations of Liverpool's fans, who had previously held up a flag bearing the slogan "UEFA LIARS" and loudly jeered the Champions League anthem to express their rage at being wrongly held responsible for the chaos at the previous season's final, were soon to be effectively silenced.
After Alisson, the Liverpool goalkeeper, imitated Courtois by hacking a clearance straight at Vinicius Junior, who had just scored a brilliant goal in the 21st minute to restore parity, the Brazilian held his head in agony as the ball looped behind him and into the net in front of the stunned Kop.
Real took the lead two minutes after the break when Eder Militao headed in a free-kick from Luka Modric, which changed the game's focus completely.
When Karim Benzema's shot was deflected in by Joe Gomez, Real firmly established their superiority. The French striker then coolly added a fifth goal following more masterful work from the ageless Modric.
Liverpool has previously staged impressive comebacks, but it would be truly remarkable if they were to do so at the Bernabeu.
