César Azpilicueta was hospitalized after being hit in the face by substitute Sekou Mara late in the game, according to Chelsea manager Graham Potter.
Southampton took the lead at Stamford Bridge thanks to James Ward-Prowse's memorable free kick, leaving the Blues searching for a goal that would have at least given them a point.
That goal was sufficient to secure the Saints' first league victory of the year, despite Chelsea doing almost everything they could to tie the score.
“He’s in hospital. He is conscious and speaking to his wife,” Potter revealed.
“Hopefully he is in the best place and we’re monitoring. He needs to take all the precautions we need to take now.”
Graham Potter is under increasing pressure following yet another lackluster performance as Chelsea has now won just two of their previous fourteen games overall.
If Cesar Azpilicueta, one of the most seasoned Premier League players, cannot be recovered in time for the London derby against Tottenham the following weekend, it will be a huge loss.
Chelsea, who are still in 10th place in the league standings, will be hoping that this victory will help Southampton begin to move up the table and out of last place.
