A few weeks after making a surprise move to Old Trafford, Wout Weghorst finally won the first trophy of his career with Manchester United. He described it as the realization of a childhood dream.
After spending the first half of the season in Turkey with Besiktas, the Dutch striker joined on loan from Championship club Burnley in January.
In the Carabao Cup final at Wembley, after Casemiro had given United the lead against Newcastle with a goal from the penalty spot, Weghorst assisted Marcus Rashford in setting up the 2-0 victory. Rashford's shot deflected off of defender Sven Botman.
The Dutch forward said: “It is a childhood dream to play for this amazing club, to play a final and also be important in this final with the second goal.”
After competing in two cup finals with AZ Alkmaar, Weghorst reached his third cup final, and at the age of 30, after tallying 177 goals for clubs and his country, he won his first trophy.
He added: “In the Netherlands, I played two cup finals and lost both of them. This was the third time. Of course, that’s something special and of course, you put in all the hard work, hard effort to get really something in your head.”
