Fans were perplexed on Wednesday night as Barcelona player Ousmane Dembele was photographed at the Stadium of Light with Sunderland owner Kyril Louis-Dreyfus.
In the fight for promotion to the Premier League, Sheffield United got back on the winning track by defeating the Black Cats 2-1 in the Championship.
But, during footage on Sky Sports just after halftime, the French winger could be seen in the audience, sitting close to two others.
The former Borussia Dortmund player, who left the game hurt in late January's 1-0 victory for Barcelona against Girona, was seated in the directors' box.
Dembele attended the game since the club's owner is a friend of his.
In June, 25-year-old French billionaire Louis-Dreyfus, who also has a tiny investment in Marseille, took control of the company.
They often post pictures of one another to social media, and after Sunderland was promoted last year, Dembele congratulated them on Instagram.
With Catalan giants Barcelona, the France international has agreed to a new deal that will last until the summer of 2024.
