Bojan Krkic, a former Barcelona starlet, has announced his retirement from football at the age of 32.
On Thursday, Krkic made the announcement formally at a ceremony alongside Joan Laporta, the president of Barcelona, in the Auditori 1899 of Camp Nou.
The former Stoke City striker, who was once touted as a future star in the Barcelona academy and compared to Lionel Messi, was released by the Japanese team Vissel Kobe in December.
Bojan, a Serbian football player whose own career ended in Spain, was accepted at the age of nine into Barcelona's renowned academy.
At 17 years and 19 days old, Bojan made his first-team Barcelona debut in 2007, shattering Messi's previous team record for the youngest player to play in a La Liga game.
Prior to being traded to Roma in 2011, he spent four seasons with the Barcelona first team, scoring 41 goals in 162 games.
Ajax and AC Milan were among his other stops in Europe before he signed with Stoke City in 2014.
The Spaniard was released by the Potters in 2019 and played 85 times for Stoke, scoring 16 goals.
Krkic had several victories as a player, including two Champions League titles, three LaLiga titles, a Club World Cup, an Eredivisie medal, the Canadian Cup, Copa Del Rey, and the UEFA Supercup.
