After a stunning year in which he led Argentina to their first World Cup victory in 36 years over Qatar, Lionel Messi won the award for the second time.

The 35-year-old scored seven goals as Argentina advanced all the way to the final football match, earning 52 points thanks to votes from coaches, players, and fans.

Kylian Mbappe finished second with 44 points, followed by Karim Benzema with 35.

Since signing for £14 million, Julian Alvarez has scored 10 goals for Manchester City.

Prior to his moce to City, Alvarez had scored 11 goals in 17 league games for River Plate before joining City. He then scored four goals for Argentina, including twice against Croatia in the semi-final, as they won the world championship for the third time.

Alvarez came in seventh in the poll, placing him ahead of big names like Neymar (9th), teammate Kevin De Bruyne (10th), Champions League final hero Vinicius Jr. (11th), Robert Lewandowski (12th), and Mo Salah (14th), who were the winners last year.
