Former Nigerian captain Jay-Jay Okocha's choice to sign with Bolton Wanderers in the English Premier League has drawn criticism from Brazilian football great Ronaldinho.
Okocha worked with PSG for four years before moving to Bolton in 2002.
The French team's midfield maestro played 84 times and scored 12 goals. He appeared in 124 games for Bolton, helping the side become the first to play in Europe.
Okocha confessed that his decision to transfer to Bolton was ill-considered in a 2021 interview with talkSPORT.
Okocha's former colleague at Paris Saint-Germain, Ronaldinho, believes that moving to England prevented Okocha from reaching his full potential.
Jay-Jay received a lot of appreciation from Ronaldinho, who remarked, “Jay Jay Okocha, wow!! That man made football listen to him. At training, we would watch him doing a freestyle; whatever he wanted to do, the ball would do it. But his problem is that he was too keen to move to England.”
Ronaldinho almost moved to Manchester United, but he decided to join Barcelona instead, a Spanish powerhouse.
Okocha would have been better suited transferring to Spain or Italy, where talented players like him are highly regarded, in Ronaldinho's opinion.
