Following the elimination of his native Brazil, soccer legend Pele wished for Argentina and Lionel Messi to win the World Cup, according to his daughter.
Pele, who passed away at the age of 82 on December 29, watched most of the tournament in Qatar from his hospital bed but frequently shared updates about it online.
He frequently tweeted messages of support for Brazil, the team he won three World Cups with, up until their elimination on penalties to Croatia in the quarterfinals.
His daughter Kely Nascimento has since revealed that after his native Brazil heartbreakingly exited the tournament, her father supported Brazil's South American rivals.
She revealed that she had shared the tale of Pele's support by posting a selfie of herself with Messi's wife Antonela Roccuzzo on Instagram.
Messi added two more goals to his tournament total of seven during the World Cup final at the Lusail Stadium, and he made history by winning player of the tournament twice as his team defeated France on penalties.
After finally winning the one trophy that had eluded him throughout his extraordinary career, he cemented his reputation as the greatest of all time for many fans.
While this was going on, Pele, a young black boy from Tres Coracoes in southern Minas Gerais, led Brazil to their first World Cup in Sweden in 1958 at the age of 17.
In total, he scored 1,282 goals in 1,366 games over the course of his career, including 77 in 92 international appearances.
On November 29, Pele was given a medical admission to the Sao Paulo Albert Einstein Hospital.
After having a colon tumor surgically removed in September 2021, he had kidney and prostate issues ever since.
Before the King's coffin was brought to Santos, the 18-year team he played for, and carried down the touchline at Vila Belmiro stadium, Brazil observed three days of state mourning.
