In order to eliminate Liverpool from Europe's premier club tournament for a third consecutive year, Real Madrid defeated the Reds 1-0 in the second leg of their Round of 16 UEFA Champions League (UCL) match. Los Blancos ultimately triumphed 6-2 on aggregate.

When Liverpool was down three goals and traveling to the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, Jürgen Klopp decided to go all-out and field four attackers in an effort to spark another incredible UCL comeback for Liverpool. A lot of activity ensued in the first 20 minutes, with Vinicius Junior and Eduardo Camavinga amazingly being stopped by Alisson Becker after Thibaut Courtois denied Darwin Nez. While Luka Modri's bold shot missed the goal, it captured everyone's attention as it fizzed just over.

Afterwards, Courtois had to make two saves as he diverted dangerous shots from Nez and Cody Gakpo. Even yet, as the half came to a close, Liverpool failed to provide the consistent aggressiveness that Klopp's squad selection had implied they would, though Los Blancos did contribute to this by expertly establishing spells of control to dull the game's intensity. When Karim Benzema had set Federico Valverde up with a pass, Alisson entered the game to thwart him. Later, the Frenchman had a shot of his own stopped by Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Los Blancos seemed to be in control as Modri flicked the ball over Alexander-Arnold and crossed the ball to Valverde. But, Valverde was unable to put the finishing touch as his header bounced against the top of the goal and went behind. Even though the scores were level for the evening, Benzema was unable to hit the back of the net after similarly clever play from Vincius, and Liverpool's energy levels gradually decreased as thoughts of a comeback faded away.

Los Blancos celebrated their milestone of being the first club to play 300 UCL games with a win on their path to the quarterfinals, adding salt to Liverpool's wounds. Vincius recovered from messing up his own shot to set up Benzema for a straightforward goal. Liverpool, however, has already lost two straight games and has to get into the top four of the Premier League to compete on the greatest stage next season.
