In a dramatic 3-3 draw against top-four contender Tottenham Hotspur, who had only won one of their previous five games overall, Southampton grabbed a crucial point in their fight to stay in the Premier League (PL).
Spurs knew they needed to get off to a good start against their struggling opponents after their two previous Premier League away trips ended in back-to-back losses to Wolves and Leicester. Nonetheless, Southampton won a fiercely contested first half hour after Ward-Prowse wasted the hosts' finest chance to score by shooting wide of the goal.
As the first half went on, Spurs progressively grabbed control of the situation and deservedly took the lead at the stroke of halftime. Son Heung-min had exceptional vision to see Pedro Porro's rogue run. The Spaniard took a moment to gather himself before hitting a potent close-range shot past Gavin Bazunu to give the visitors a crucial advantage.
Ché Adams' goal off of Theo Walcott's low ball gave Southampton an instant reaction only 45 seconds after the restart as they came out ready to get back into the game. The visitors reclaimed the lead in the 65th minute when Harry Kane climbed highest in the area to head Dejan Kulusevski's cross into the top of the net. Spurs continued to pose a danger at the other end as the hosts attempted to capitalize on their momentum heading into the final 30 minutes.
10 minutes later, Spurs increased their lead thanks to a precise goal from Ivan Perii that at first glance seemed to terminate the match. But, the Saints remained resolute and quickly cut the lead to just one goal, thanks to a goal from ex-Arsenal star Theo Walcott that set up a thrilling finish. After Pape Sarr tripped Ainsley Maitland-Niles in stoppage time, Southampton had a fantastic chance to tie the score. The hosts were awarded a dramatic share of the spoils as Ward-Prowse stepped up and calmly drilled his penalty shot into the top corner, leaving the Spurs players in shock.
