With 30 minutes remaining, Barcelona's Ronald Araujo was sent off for a last-man challenge on Los Che forward Hugo Duro. After Jules Kounde's poor header, the Uruguayan was sent off, and Barca coach Xavi Hernandez acknowledged that the decision was justifiable.
Ferran Torres missed a penalty that would have given Barcelona a 2-0 lead minutes before Araujo was sent off. The 22-year-old missed his penalty kick against his former team, and Torres and Ansu Fati had argued about who should take the penalty first.
Fati was clearly dissatisfied that he was not permitted to take the penalty, and he would have been even more so had he missed it. Xavi, on the other hand, confirmed that Torres was the intended taker.
“There is an order in the penalties that we communicate to the players. Ferran was top of the list. The staff decided, and the players know that.”
In the next La Liga match, Barcelona takes on Athletic Club, but they won't have Araujo with them. However, the Uruguayan will return the following week for El Clasico.
