Barcelona will not be expelled from Champions League

Despite charges of corruption, Barcelona is not in danger of being barred from the Champions League this summer.

The Catalans are embroiled in an alleged scandal that has shaken both Spanish and European football. It is alleged that the club paid Jose Maria Enriquez Negreira's personal companies, DASNIL and NILSAT, a total of £6.4 million over a number of transactions. Negreira was the former vice-president of the Spanish FA's Technical Committee of Referees (CTA).

The club was accused of corruption over the payments, and Negreira, the vice-president of the Spanish referees' committee at the time, made the accusation.

The meeting between the two went well, according to Sport, a Spanish daily, and topics like the European Super League and the refereeing crisis were covered.

Laporta reportedly went to Ceferin's home Slovenia to calm the air and present Barcelona's argument that they did not make unethical payments intended to influence referees.

According to the story, UEFA intends to maintain a low profile after the meeting as they weigh their choices and take the long view of the procedure.

According to reports, UEFA will hold off on imposing any sanctions until the start of the next season as they await the outcome of the Catalan club's legal challenge.

Barcelona reportedly knows that nothing will happen in the near future, so their approaching La Liga championship celebrations can go on as planned since they already have a spot in the Champions League for next season, at least for the time being.

Despite Ceferin's firm statements in the days after the scandal broke, there is reportedly hesitation in punishing a club of Barcelona's prestige without the support of a judicial decision.

As fines may only be meted out for offenses committed within three years, Barcelona will not be penalized by the Spanish football authority.
