Erik ten Hag has defended David de Gea after Manchester United's 3-0 Europa League loss to Sevilla on Thursday, despite the goalkeeper's costly errors in the game.
De Gea's decision to pass to a Harry Maguire who was under pressure and who subsequently lost control, enabling Youssef En-Nesyri to score, was partially to fault for Sevilla's first goal.
He made yet another obvious mistake that allowed En-Nesyri to secure Sevilla's well-earned victory. This season, there have been demands for Ten Hag to take De Gea's position this summer when his contract with United ends.
However, in response to a query about De Gea's long-term position as United's keeper, Ten Hag said,“He is the one with the most clean sheets in the Premier League. So it shows he’s a very capable goalkeeper.”
Ten Hag voiced his dissatisfaction with the attitude shown by his United players during the game. He referred to it as "unacceptable" and emphasized that if they wanted to succeed and win trophies they had to learn from their errors, begin games with more drive, passion, and calmness, and have greater character.
“We have to pick the players up,” said Ten Hag. “But we also have to face that we let ourselves down, we have let the fans down. If you want to win trophies, if you want to be successful, you need character…Everyone can see that the demands and the standard have to be higher in a club such as Manchester United.”
But following United's loss to Sevilla, Ten Hag responded to a question about whether De Gea is the team's long-term goalkeeper: ‘He is the one with the most clean sheets in the Premier League.
‘So it shows he’s a very capable goalkeeper.’
