The police attempted to arrest musician Seun Kuti for 21 days for allegedly assaulting a police officer, but their plan was thwarted by a Chief Magistrate Court in Yaba, Lagos.
According to SaharaReporters, the police had requested to keep Seun Kuti for 21 days on Tuesday, May 16, stating the policeman he is accused of assaulting is in a coma at an unidentified hospital.
But on Tuesday afternoon, the judge released the Afrobeat singer on bail and gave the Nigerian police 48 hours to wrap up their investigation into the alleged assault before releasing Kuti.
The police were also instructed not to pursue charges against the defendant by the Chief Magistrate. She gave instructions for duplicating the case file and sending it to the Lagos State Directorate of Public Prosecutions for prosecution.
