Murphy is credited for guiding United out of the destruction of the Munich Air Disaster in 1958, which lost the lives of eight players and left Sir Matt Busby very sick in the hospital. Murphy served as Busby's assistant throughout his illustrious managerial tenure.
The Welshman, who had played a crucial role in the Busby Babes' growth, took over as interim manager that year and, against all the odds, guided United to the FA Cup final.
Murphy led the squad out at Wembley 65 years ago on Wednesday, the day before the statue ceremony.
It is located at the stadium's renowned Stretford end and features the club legend energetically leading forward with a ball tucked under his arm.
Both the United young squad and former players Brian Kidd and Alex Stepney, who unveiled the monument, were present for the ceremony. Although Sir Alex Ferguson wasn't present, he spoke via video.
In addition to his coaching career, which included leading Wales to the 1958 World Cup, Murphy played more than 200 games for West Brom until the Second World War broke out, ending his playing career.
Busby eventually hired him to run the youth program at United, and he was instrumental in creating the club's academy's long-standing reputation.
