Gio Reyna, a representative of the USA, was heartbroken on the pitch as his Borussia Dortmund colleagues missed the opportunity to win the German Bundesliga on Saturday.
Dortmund had the league title in a grip since Reyna and team needed to defeat Mainz to break Bayern Munich's hold on the German top division and win the championship.
However, they could only manage a 2-2 draw, while Bayern managed a thrilling 2-1 victory against Koln, with Jamal Musiala scored the game-winning goal in the 89th minute, to win the league for the 11th consecutive season.
When the game ended, Dortmund players collapsed to the ground, and Reyna was spotted looking clearly upset and maybe in tears as the truth set in.
Dortmund was about to win their first championship since the 2011–12 campaign. They just scored their equalizer in the six minutes of stoppage time, making it a tense final day.
Reyna had an immediate impact after coming off the bench in the 63rd minute of the season's last game. He provided the draw's two assists.
Andreas Hanche-Olsen's header in the fifteenth minute gave Dortmund the lead.
Following the saving of Sebastian Haller's penalty shot, Karim Onisiwo extended Mainz's advantage in the 24th minute.
In the 69th minute, Raphael Guerreiro gave the home team a chance when he headed in a cross from Reyna.
After Kingsley Coman's early curling goal in Cologne was wiped out by Dejan Ljubicic's 81st-minute penalty, which put Dortmund ahead by a point at the time, Dortmund quickly regained the lead in the rankings.
However, there was one more surprise as Serge Gnabry, who was accountable for giving away that last-second penalty, set up Musiala to score.
Dortmund's Niklas Sule scored in the last seconds, but it didn't matter since Thomas Tuchel's Bayern won the championship.
