On Thursday, a Sabo-Yaba Chief Magistrates' Court in Lagos approved a request to extend Seun Kuti's custody for an extra four days.
Kuti's detention was extended by the Chief Magistrate, Mrs. Adeola Olatubosun, until May 22.
The motion was made by Mr. Simon Lough (SAN), who arrived in court with a group of police attorneys.
He claims that the reason for the extension is to allow for more case-specific research.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Kuti is accused of assaulting a police officer.
On May 13, he is accused of committing the crime on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos State.
He intentionally blocked a moving police car while driving erratically on the bridge, which led to the police charging him with slapping an inspector.
Tuesday saw Kuti's arraignment, and the chief magistrate subsequently ordered a 48-hour detention for him.
However, she believed that at the conclusion of the 48-hour detention, the defendant should be granted to bail in the amount of one million Naira with two sureties in the same amount.
One of the sureties, according to her, must be a landlord who is subject to the court's jurisdiction.
She had ordered the prosecutor to duplicate the case file and send a copy to the state director of public prosecutions for guidance. She had delayed the case until May 22 for mention.
