The former Manchester United player reportedly made the decision to step down as PSV Eindhoven's head coach.
Ruud Van Nistelrooy resigned from his position as coach of the Eredivisie team because the club's administration wasn't backing him.
Meanwhile, 20-year-old Xavi Simons thanked Nistelrooy for helping him improve as a player.
He captioned the photo, "Thank you for making me a better player and helping me achieve one of my dreams of making it to the national team. Forever grateful. Good luck in the future, mister"
For the Eredivisie team this season, Simons, 20, has been in excellent form, scoring 16 goals and tossing out nine assists.
Simons left Paris Saint-Germain for the Boeren in the summer on a free transfer, and the French champions
This season, Simons not only helped PSV win the KNVB Cup and the Johan Cruyff Shield, but he also made his debut for his country in the World Cup in Qatar.
