Romelu Lukaku's original club Chelsea may welcome him back this summer, according to Inter Milan chairman Steven Zhang, since the Serie A powerhouses have yet to begin negotiations with the Chelsea over a long-term contract for the striker.
Lukaku was permitted to re-join Inter Milan on loan last summer for this season after failing in his first season back at Chelsea after his £97.5 million transfer in 2021.
Despite having a difficult season with injuries, the Belgian nonetheless managed to finish the year for Inter with 14 goals across all competitions.
Lukaku's future at Chelsea is still up in the air, and Mauricio Pochettino, the club's new manager, is anticipated to replace him with a new striker during the summer transfer window.
“He [Lukaku] has shown to be a great forward for Inter; he is an extraordinary guy,” Zhang was quoted by Metro as saying after Inter Milan’s Champions League final defeat against Man City on Saturday night in Turkey.
In the match against Manchester City in the UCL final, Lukaku came off the bench to replace Dzeko.
The closest that Lukaku's squad got to equalizing was on a header, but he was unable to score.
The Belgian international headed the ball into the path of the Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson from a close distance, but Ederson saved it.
“He is under contract at Chelsea, so we will have to wait and speak with them to understand his situation,” he added.
