Following Chelsea's last-second withdrawal from the competition for acquiring Sporting CP midfielder Manuel Ugarte, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) walked away as the winner.
The two teams have been vying for the services of the 22-year-old, and conversations have included Jorge Mendes, one of his agents, and other representatives.
Although Ugarte preferred a transfer to the Premier League, Chelsea had agreed to match his €60 million release clause plus €5 million in add-ons. At first, it seemed like Mauricio Pochettino's PSG would sign Ugarte.
However, as revealed by Ben Jacobs and then verified by Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea quickly opted to back out of the agreement on Sunday night because they did not want to pay more than the market rate to match PSG's bid.
Although there are various narratives about the precise sum, PSG allegedly gave Ugarte a wage offer of €10 million per year, contrary to Chelsea's perception that their offer was comparable.
Now that Fabrizio Romano has acknowledged it, PSG has really prevailed in the battle for Ugarte's business. The player has landed in Paris for his physical and is scheduled to sign his deal with the French club on Monday. Alongside fellow recruit Marco Asensio, who just left Real Madrid as a free agent, Ugarte will be joining the team.
