Court remands suspected k*llers of naval officer in Ondo

An Ondo State Chief Magistrate Court in Akure has ordered two of the three suspects in the alleged murder of naval officer Samson Akingbagbohun to stay in detention.
Francis Shagari, 17, and the defendants, Johnson Adeleke and Ayomide Sambo Ayomide, all 20, were held with them for allegedly shooting a police officer in Ido Ani, in the state's Ose Local Government Area, following a fight.

When they appeared in court, they were then accused with two charges of conspiracy and murder.

According to the prosecution, Sections 319, 316, and 342 of the Criminal Code, Cap. 37, Vol. 1, Laws of the Ondo State of Nigeria 2006, were broken.

However, the defendants did submit not guilty pleas to the charges, but the court rejected them.

According to the prosecution, Inspector Nelson Akintimehin, the defendants and other suspects still at large committed the offences on June 26, 2023, at about 7:40 p.m. in Idoani in the Ondo State Magisterial District.

He appealed with the court to remand the offenders to Olokuta Correctional Centre so that the case file could be sent to the Director of Public Prosecution. Tolulope Adebiyi, the defense counsel for the defendants, urged the judge to release her clients on bond.

Adebiyi told the court that the third defendant, Shagari, 17, is a minor and shouldn't be tried in an adult court, and that the second defendant, Sambo, had sickle cell disease.

Chief magistrate Musa Al-Yunus said that there were "probable grounds" to imprison the two defendants. The court set bail for the third defendant, Francis Shagari, at N500,000 with two more sureties set at the same sum.

The judge adjourned the case until August 1, 2023.
