Arsenal finally defeated Manchester City in 2023, defeating the Citizens on penalties to win the FA Community Shield and give their season the best possible start after three previous unsuccessful tries.
In the early stages of the 101st Community Shield, there wasn't much to separate Manchester City and Arsenal, as would be anticipated in a matchup between two teams who were evenly matched the previous season.
The closest either team got to grabbing the early momentum was a Rodri pop-shot from 25 yards out that whistled just wide of the post. Instead, Mikel Arteta, the manager of Arsenal, broke the new regulations by talking himself into receiving a yellow card, which was the most memorable incident on the sidelines.
Cole Palmer scored a magnificent goal in the 77th minute that seemed to be the winning goal. At least until Leandro Trossard's powerful shot deflected in off Manuel Akanji to send the game to penalties and one of Arteta's substitutes had his opinion on the situation.
