Richarlison scored his first goal of the year to offset Micky van de Ven's own goal in the 19th minute, which had given the hosts a justifiable lead at halftime in the absence of manager Marco Silva who was serving a touchline suspension.

With no more goals scored and a score of 1-1 after 90 minutes, penalties were necessary. After five successful penalties, a low attempt by Sanchez that Marek Rodak saved proved to be the difference.

Tottenham now only has one realistic chance to attempt to break their trophy drought, which dates back to 2008. Kenny Tete slammed Fulham's sixth penalty past Fraser Forster to secure their spot in the third round.

Last season, both of these Premier League clubs quickly left the tournament, but nine changes were made by Spurs, who entered at the second round stage for the first time since 2009. Overall, 15 changes were made.

When left back Antonee Robinson outran Sanchez and crossed to the back post, Rodrigo Muniz missed the chance since Fulham mostly used their starting back four.

It was a hint of things to come from Sanchez, who was supposed to depart this summer but has instead climbed ahead of Eric Dier in Postecoglou's defensive pecking order.

Sanchez's issues persisted, and in the 19th minute, he contributed to the first goal.

On the outside of the box, Tom Cairney turned Sanchez inside out, and Spurs center-back Van de Ven deflected Sanchez's floating cross over Forster.

After a challenging first half of 2023, Postecoglou had restored a positive vibe at Tottenham, but the visiting supporters at Craven Cottage directed their anger at club president Daniel Levy with shouts demanding that he step down.

After that, Forster had to be quick to save Muniz's shot before Spurs finally threatened, but Tim Ream stopped Richarlison's shot and Ivan Perisic's free-kick was diverted wide.

On the cusp of halftime, the vivacious Muniz came even closer with a header from Adama Traore's cross, but Forster made a fine stop to hold the score at 1-0.

Giovani Lo Celso was replaced by young attacker Dane Scarlett after Spurs manager Postecoglou decided enough was enough.

With 56 minutes remaining, the equalizer finally come, and Richarlison savored the occasion as he dove low at the back post to head in Perisic's cross for just his fourth goal for Tottenham after a £60 million transfer last summer.

Fulham was dissatisfied with how Perisic took advantage of the absence of the hosts' right-back Tete, who had to leave the field to obtain a new boot following a superb challenge on Scarlett early in the game.

Bobby Decordova-Reid shot wide from within the box for the hosts after they scored, while replacement Harry Wilson had his shot blocked by Sanchez.

By this time, Dejan Kulusevski and Son Heung-min were playing, and Manor Solomon almost won it for Spurs with a curled shot, but Rodak stopped. Wilson was then denied by Forster with his legs, forcing penalties.

Andreas Pereira, Raul Jimenez, Wilson, Joao Palhinha, and Tete were all able to score for Fulham from 12 yards, but Sanchez's feeble attempt guaranteed Tottenham was eliminated in the second round for the first time since 2005.
