Neymar, a former star of Paris Saint-Germain, has refuted media rumors that he chose to play in the Saudi Pro League for financial gain.

Recall that Neymar signed a two-year contract with Al Hilal and would earn £129.4 million annually, or £2.5 million on average every week.

Neymar has been criticized of departing Europe for the eye-watering money given to him in Saudi Arabia despite still having a fair number of years to play.

However, the 31-year- Brazilian star said in a news conference that his ambition to "be a global player" overshadowed financial considerations in driving him to the Middle East.

“I have achieved a lot in Europe & enjoyed special times but I have always wanted to be a global player & test myself with new challenges & opportunities in new places. I want to write new sporting history, and the Saudi Pro League has tremendous energy & quality players at the moment,” Neymar said
