
Brazil dropped Manchester United winger Antony after charges of violence against an ex-girlfriend
Following accusations of abuse from his former girlfriend, Brazil has released Manchester United winger Antony.
The 23-year-old was removed from the team, according to the Brazilian Football Federation, after "facts became public" that "need to be investigated".
Brazilian federation official statement on Antony dropped after investigation reads:
“In order to safeguard the alleged victim, the player, the Brazilian national team and the CBF, the organization informs that Antony has been removed from the Brazilian national team
Allegations made by Antony's ex-partner were published on Monday by the Brazilian news source UOL.
Police in Greater Manchester and Sao Paulo are looking into the allegations, which the footballer has refuted.
Antony is charged with assaulting Gabriela Cavallin, his ex-girlfriend, "with a headbutt" on January 15 at a hotel room in Manchester, leaving her with a cut head that required medical attention.
She also claims that a punch to the chest damaged a silicone breast implant, necessitating corrective surgery.
For the forthcoming World Cup qualifiers against Bolivia and Peru, Gabriel Jesus of Arsenal has replaced Antony in the Brazil team.
