Martin Odegaard was benched during Arsenal's match against Sheffield United, and Mikel Arteta has explained why.
On Saturday, the Gunners defeated the Blades handily in their Premier League encounter.
The Mikel Arteta team recovered from last weekend's disheartening stalemate with Chelsea.
Eddie Nketiah scored three goals earlier today. Fabio Vieira then scored a penalty and Takehiro Tomiyasu scored the fifth.
For the first time this season, Arsenal supporters were taken aback to see their captain, Martin Odegaard, substituted for the bench.
The 24-year-old midfielder saw the game from the sidelines and had no involvement in it.
Odegaard has been dealing with a minor ailment for the previous several weeks, according to Mikel Arteta, who explained why he chose to give him a break.
Mikel Arteta on why Martin Ødegaard didn’t feature vs Sheffield United:
“We went through all the minutes that everybody that has played in the last few weeks. He’d played an enormous amount of minutes, Arteta said.
Next Tuesday is Arsenal's return to the League Cup, where they will play West Ham.
It's unclear whether Odegaard will be able to play in the game.
Mikel Arteta concluded, “Martin has been carrying a little thing that wasn’t very comfortable in the games. We have players with enormous quality and we have to trust them. We believe it was the right day to do so.”
