Nigeria’s Super Eagles Slide Two Places in FIFA Ranking
Nigeria's national football team, the Super Eagles, experienced a descent in their global ranking, moving from the 40th position to 42nd, as per the most recent FIFA rankings.
The update, released on FIFA’s official website on Thursday, November 30, 2023, showcased Nigeria's slip in the rankings. This fall came on the heels of the Super Eagles' consecutive 1-1 draws against Lesotho and Zimbabwe in their initial Group C fixtures for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers this month.
Despite commencing their journey in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers with two drawn matches, Nigeria currently holds the third position in Group C standings.
The forthcoming 2024 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) set to take place in Ivory Coast presents an opportunity for Nigeria to improve its ranking. A commendable performance in the tournament scheduled for January could potentially propel Nigeria upward in the FIFA rankings.
Nigeria is scheduled to face Ivory Coast, hosting them for their Group A match, setting the stage for a pivotal game in their pursuit of an enhanced global standing.
