Nigerian Music Sensation, Rema Clarifies Mask Controversy Amidst Performance Criticism
Divine Ikubor, widely known as Rema, has addressed the controversy surrounding his recent performance at the 02 Arena, where he faced accusations of wearing a "demonic" mask during his concert.
In response to the allegations, Rema clarified that the mask worn during his performance was a representation inspired by the bronzes of his ancestors, which were looted by the British. He aimed to recreate and pay homage to the stolen cultural artifacts.
Following his electrifying performance, Rema encountered online backlash from some fans who speculated about his affiliation with the Illuminati, based on the choice of mask worn during the 02 Arena show.
Defending Rema's artistic choice, a supporter from Benin City highlighted that the mask resembled that of Queen Idia, a revered figure in the history of the Benin Kingdom and a national hero.
Addressing the accusations leveled against him, Rema conveyed his perspective on the matter, yet the details of his response are yet to be disclosed.
He said, “RAVAGE UPRISING/ My Ancestors bronzes sit in the museum of this very city so I remade mine. Hence, Edo is redefined, the map reshaped, your minds awakened & the mask reborn. Thank you London!
