Uproar in the Senate Over New Minority Leadership Announcement

Senator Tony Nwoye Challenges Senate President Akpabio's Leadership Decisions

There was a heated commotion in the Senate chambers on Tuesday, November 21, following the proclamation by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, appointing Abba Moro of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the new Senate Minority Leader.

Akpabio's announcement of Osita Ngwu (PDP, Enugu West) as the minority whip triggered discontent within the Labour Party caucus, alleging exclusion and lack of consultation in the decision-making process.

Senator Okechukwu Ezea vehemently protested the absence of representation for his party within the minority leadership, denouncing the arrangement as an injustice against other minority parties.

Senator Tony Nwoye from Anambra North further escalated the tension, accusing Akpabio of unilaterally selecting minority leaders for the opposition parties without due consultation or consensus.

‘’How can you be choosing minority leaders for us? Are we your slaves?” Nwoyi tackled Akpabio

In response to the accusations, Akpabio defended his actions by asserting that the names announced were the choices presented to him by the minority senators, with the PDP possessing the majority.

Akpabio clarified that a simple majority was the requisite criterion to determine leadership, citing that "41 minority senators endorsed Abah Moro, while 30 supported Osita Ngwu." According to Akpabio, this signified a majority decision.

The contention revolved around the interpretation of majority representation in the selection process, with the differing perspectives leading to heightened tensions and dissatisfaction among the minority parties within the Senate.
