Controversial VAR Official Removed from Champions League Duty After PSG vs. Newcastle Penalty Review
The VAR official who made the critical decision to grant Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) a penalty against Newcastle has faced consequences, being excluded from officiating the Real Sociedad versus RB Salzburg match in tonight's Champions League fixture.
Tomasz Kwiatkowski, the involved official, instructed referee Szymon Marciniak to re-examine a potential handball by Tino Livramento during the November 28th match. Despite the ball initially striking Livramento's stomach before contacting his elbow, triggering the review, this action has led to the VAR official's removal from tonight's Champions League schedule.
The penalty awarded to PSG, converted by Kylian Mbappe in the 90th minute, resulted in a draw for the team. Newcastle United, with Alexander Isak's initial goal in the first half, had been on the brink of claiming victory.
