Nigerian striker Odion Ighalo expresses disappointment at the dearth of home-based players in the Super Eagles' provisional squad for the upcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
In the run-up to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Nigerian striker Odion Ighalo has voiced his disappointment regarding the limited inclusion of home-based players in the Super Eagles’ provisional squad.
Coach Jose Peseiro recently unveiled the 41-man provisional squad for AFCON 2023, scheduled for January in Ivory Coast. Notably, the roster featured only three goalkeepers: Ojo Olorunleke, Amas Obasogie, and Christian Nwoke.
Expressing his views to Oma Sports, Ighalo stated, “I don’t think it’s right not to invite home-based players. In this 40-man list, at least five to seven players should be included to encourage them. Not inviting them implies a lack of focus on the local league.”
It's worth noting that Odion Ighalo retired from international football in 2019 after securing the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Golden Boot. However, in 2021, the former Manchester United star briefly returned to represent the Super Eagles before hanging up his boots for the second time.
