Super Eagles Set to Soar in Group A Clash at Africa Cup of Nations
The anticipation for AFCON 2023 is on the rise as Jose Peseiro, the coach of the Super Eagles, has disclosed the 40-man provisional squad geared up for the tournament. The Eagles, positioned in Group A alongside hosts Côte d’Ivoire, Guinea-Bissau, and Equatorial Guinea, are preparing for intense clashes in the upcoming championship.
In a thrilling opener slated for January 14, 2024, the Eagles are primed to take on Equatorial Guinea, followed by a pivotal encounter with Côte d’Ivoire just four days later. The group stage will culminate in a face-off against Guinea-Bissau on January 2, promising gripping football battles ahead.
Notably, Jose Peseiro has strategically included three home-based goalkeepers - Amas Obasogie, Ojo Olorunleke, and Christian Nwoke - in the roster, with no other domestic-based players securing a spot. Among the selected six goalkeepers are Francis Uzoho, Adebayo Adeleye, and Stanley Nwabali, the first-choice keeper for Chippa United.
The defensive line is fiercely contested with stalwarts like William Troost-Ekong and Kevin Akpoguma eyeing a place alongside defensive talents such as Kenneth Omeruo, Bruno Onyemaechi, Ola Aina, Semi Ajayi, and others vying for the final spot in the backline.
The midfield engine boasts formidable names like Alex Iwobi, Wilfred Ndidi, Raphael Onyedika, and a slew of other talents eager to dominate the midfield battleground. Meanwhile, the forward line is set to shine with the likes of Victor Osimhen, Emmanuel Dennis, Kelechi Iheanacho, and several other attacking sensations geared up to make their mark in the tournament.
