Manchester City Coach Acknowledges Apology to Midfielder Kalvin Phillips
Manchester City's head coach, Pep Guardiola, has expressed remorse towards Kalvin Phillips for the limited playing time the English international has experienced since Guardiola took charge at Etihad Stadium two years ago.
Despite a hefty 50 million pound transfer from Leeds United, Phillips has struggled to secure a consistent position in the team, featuring in only 16 Premier League games for Manchester City.
Guardiola formally apologized, stating, “I'm so sorry for Kalvin Phillips.” Despite the absence of Rodri in the midfield, the 28-year-old midfielder has found himself overlooked on multiple occasions throughout the season.
In a recent match against Tottenham Hotspur, Guardiola opted to field Akanji, a defender, ahead of Phillips, resulting in a draw for Manchester City.
Guardiola clarified his decisions, emphasizing the importance of good personality and character in his players.
He described Phillips as a perfect example but admitted to struggling with visualizing his role in the team, stating, “It’s just because I visualize something, I visualize the team, and I struggle a little bit to see him. That’s all.” The apology sheds light on the challenges Phillips faces in gaining a consistent spot in Manchester City's starting lineup.
