PGMOL Explains the Non-Award of Penalty to Liverpool Against Arsenal, Citing Martin Odegaard's Handball

Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) has provided clarification regarding the contentious penalty decision during the clash between Liverpool and Arsenal. The incident involved Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard, who was seen grappling with the ball as he tumbled inside the penalty area.

In a statement reported by Sky Sports, PGMOL addressed the situation by highlighting that the decision not to award a penalty was based on the assessment that "Odegaard's arm movement was directed towards his body rather than the ball as he went down."

Referee Chris Kavanagh opted to allow play to continue following the incident, a decision supported by VAR official David Coote, who, upon reviewing the play, agreed with Kavanagh's judgment of not awarding a penalty.

The match itself concluded in a 1-1 draw between the Gunners and Liverpool in their recent Premier League encounter. Arsenal seized an early lead when Gabriel Magalhaes scored a header just four minutes into the game. However, Mohamed Salah swiftly responded, netting the equalizer at the 25-minute mark.

With no further goals scored, both teams settled for a draw at the end of the 90th minute. As the Premier League heads into the festive period, Arsenal holds onto the top spot with 40 points, while Liverpool closely trails in second place with 39 points.
