Rising Afrobeats Artiste Addresses Backlash and Explains Involvement in Church Drama
Afrobeats sensation Oludipe David, popularly known as Spyro, has responded to criticism surrounding his rendition of the hit song 'Only Fine Girl' during a recent event at The Harvesters International Christian Centre.
Backlash and Debates on Christian Principles
While some questioned the alignment of Spyro's performance with Christian principles, others argued that the event's concept was intended as a stage play.
Spyro's Response: A Member of the Church and Choir
In a video shared on his Instagram page on Monday, Spyro addressed the controversy, emphasizing his membership in the church and role as a choir member. He clarified that he wasn't compensated for the performance and expressed his belief that being a celebrity shouldn't hinder him from serving God. According to Spyro, the event involved a dramatic presentation titled "Fantazia," and his rendition of 'Only Fine Girl' was part of a scene where he portrayed a character attempting to seduce the king's wife.
Spyro elaborated on the context, stating, "Fantazia is the carol service that was held yesterday, and the clip posted on Twitter is the drama that we did. I was supposed to seduce the king's wife in the drama, which was why I sang 'Only Fine Girl' to her. It was part of the narrative, depicting a story akin to Herod in the Bible where the king became angered and ordered consequences for my character."
In light of this explanation, Spyro aims to clarify the artistic and narrative intentions behind his performance within the church setting.
