Federal High Court Sentences Actress to Six Months for Currency Misconduct
Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke of the Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos, issued a verdict on February 1, 2024, convicting and sentencing Oluwadarasimi Omoseyin, an actress, to six months in prison. The charges stemmed from her actions of spraying and stepping on newly issued naira notes at a social event in Lagos State.
Initially brought to court on February 13, 2023, by the Lagos Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Omoseyin had pleaded "not guilty" to the two-count charges. She was granted bail on February 15, 2023, after her arraignment.
The turning point in Omoseyin's case occurred when operatives of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) apprehended her on Awolowo Road, Ikoyi, Lagos. This arrest was triggered by the circulation of a viral video showcasing Omoseyin engaging in the prohibited acts of defacing the newly redesigned naira notes at a social gathering. The video also captured her displaying bundles of the new currency.
